Releasing “Negativity”

The Process of Releasing Negative Emotion

Once we have attuned ourselves to the “negative” limiting feelings, memories, beliefs, etc. that is the content of the issue we want to work on, we are ready to engage in the process of letting go, or of releasing. You can think of this as a stream carrying away or a vacuum through which you are sending this negative heaviness, pain, emotion, effects of experiences, sounds and sights associated with trauma and upsetness, etc., out of your body.

Kinesthetic Release is an enhanced kind of guided imagery. It is based on feeling more than on imagery. It is a way of working with our inner, “Felt sense.” By this, I mean, the feelings and sensations held in our body. Think of a time where you felt any strong emotion. If you are sensitive enough in your observation, you will notice an immediate shift in such inner experiences as your breathing, your heart rate, muscular tension, and stomach activity. For every particular kind of emotion, you have developed very early in your life (unbeknownst to you), a particular physiologic/neurochemical signature. From the filaments in our DNA to our muscles to the edges of our energy field, every part of us snaps into resonance with whatever we are feeling. Your body does this every time you are perturbed by a limiting, blocking, or negative emotion. Your breathing becomes more shallow and rapid, because your diaphragm is constricted. Your heart begins to beat faster to try to make up for the decrease in oxygen caused by the shallow breathing. It might start to “race” if you feel any anxiety or fear at all; you can begin to sweat, feel jittery, develop an upset stomach, a headache, and more. All this is emotion in your body.

This example of inner work, just like any other kind of inner work, is REAL work. People often wonder if what they are doing inside, in their mind’s eye or in their own inner space, is real. I can assure that it is and that it can be powerfully effective and transforming. For it is within that all transformation happens, anyway.

With Kinesthetic Release, you are imaging yourself piling up all this emotional baggage outside of you. You may be thinking of/feeling a particular situation, remembering exchanges with a person or persons; recalling past events that are still upsetting to you.

You want to attune yourself to this enough that you can feel it in your body (if it is something that is still powerfully affecting you, you might not want to let yourself go too deeply into it, but you will know if it would be better for you to do this with a therapist or not). Once you are attuned to it, then begin imagining yourself piling all of the nastiness of it up in front of you.

You might (as I often have folks do if they are not familiar with this or if they do not easily visualize) use your hands to “draw” out the feeling in the body. The feelings are vibrational energy, so what it feels as though you are doing is pulling out the vibrations of the heavy, uncomfortable emotions and sensation.

When you have piled up all you can access at the time, then feel what it feels like to now be free of it. You might “see” the pile in front of you, notice it’s size, it’s composition, and notice the gratefulness you feel that this is now out of you!

Once you have done this, then  you must completely remove the pile. You can do this however you like. Trust me, no way of doing it that comes to you is wrong or bad, or not healthy. It is what is. The more anger you have inside, and the more anger is what you are releasing, for example. the more violent your images might be.People often burn their piles when they have anger. As the anger subsides, so does the intensity with which the piles are removed. It is actually a confirmation of the healing that is happening.

Once a client bought a coconut to put her anger into and then smash! Another imagined a pile of fury at a soon to be ex-husband and stomped on it until she felt it was gone! And then some, are very gentle in their releasing. Letting a soft wind carry it away. One big-hearted man held the ball in his hands and sent it love until it dissolved. Anything is possible!

After you have completely gotten rid of the tiniest speck of the pile, then stop and take a deep breath and check in with yourself about how you feel now. You will likely feel lighter, brighter, more positive, freer, etc.! If you are not able to completely remove it in the time that you have, you can “place” it inside a “treasured chest.” This will be an imaginal chest that is precious, beautiful, filled with loving, healing energy. It’s a place where you can imagistically set aside what remains, so that the healing process can continue while you attend to other aspects of your life. I like to “place” healers, Spirit, angels, loved ones around the corners and edges of this chest to continue to “heal over and love over all that is still wounded” inside.

Let me know what happens for you!
