EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) Protocol
Tapping, or EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a very effective, fast, and powerful method for reversing negative energy into positive, focused, and directed energy. Until recently, none of us really had the experience of being able to change our emotional states. The best we knew how to do was to set it aside, to distract ourselves, to go to sleep hoping we’d feel better in the morning! And when we were wracked with self-doubt, shyness, insecurity, etc. we would say, “that’s just the way I am.”
But now, we have the tools we need to successfully navigate our inner emotional world, to truly heal from traumas, negative patterning, abuses of the past, to improve our self-esteem dramatically, and to transform our lives by becoming more able to manifest and perceive the world that our hearts and spirits long to experience.
What I present below is a short cut version of the original protocol. The full protocol is in parentheses, if you’d like to use it. Most practitioners feel that there is rarely a need to use the full protocol. If an issue is not lessening after a few rounds, bring your voice more deeply into your body, speak more loudly (you’ll be amazed at how well this works) and try the full protocol.
The Basic Protocol:
1. Attune to the specific issue, event. What is the feeling, belief, memory, craving or physical sensation you want to heal, release, reverse? Don’t just think about this, actually try to feel it, or to remember yourself in a situation in which you felt this. Getting to the feeling is the most powerful way to clear the issue. Summarize this in a few words.
2. Center yourself in Spirit (God, Holy Spirit, Higher Self, etc.): focus on bringing in Spirit to assist you in releasing the negatively charged emotions.
3. Gauge the SUDS level:
SUDS= Subjective units of discomfort
Scale is 0 – 10, where 0 = no disturbance, completely calm and 10 = the most disturbed you can imagine being.
4. Clearing the Objections to healing:
Repeat an affirmation similar to this, 3 times:
“Even though I have this _____[your summary]_________, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.” (while tapping on the Sore Spot or the KC point)
5. The points:
Tap lightly and rapidly, at least 7 times at your own pace, on each of the following meridian points, repeat the reminder phrase once and breathe deeply at each point.
CR, EB, SE, UE, UN, CH, CB, UA, wrists (TH, IF, MF, BF, KC)
(6. The Gamut procedure:
On the back of either hand, in the valley between the last two knuckles, while tapping continuously with three fingers of the other hand, do the following 9 steps:
1) close eyes, 2) open eyes, 3) look hard down to the right (without moving head), 4) look hard down to the left, 5) roll eyes clockwise, 6) roll eyes counter clockwise, 7) hum a measure of “Happy Birthday,”
count to five, 9) hum again.)
7. Repeat the point sequence –CR, EB, SE, UE, UN, CH, CB, UA, wrists (RB, TH, IF, MF, BF, KC, ). The phrasing here is “releasing this. . . .” At CR point, focus on bringing in Spirit to flow throughout your being, breathing out the negative, and filling up with healing Light (God, Higher Self, etc.).
8. Reassess: Close eyes and take a deep, releasing breath. Attune yourself to the issue again, what comes up for you now (this may be body process, images, emotions, or thoughts). Assess SUDS level.
9. Repeat the process: If there has been a shift from one emotion to another, or to another image, change the affirmation phrase accordingly.
10. Continue the process until the SUDs level reaches 0. Test to see that it is a “true 0.” Do this by walking step by step through the past incident, if this is clear, then do the same with the anticipation of a similar incident in the future. If any anxiety is noticed at any point along the way, repeat above process, then return to the “walking through.”
The Points:
Sore Spot: Neurolymphatic reflex 2 inches under collarbone and 2 inches inside shoulder on either right or left, but left (heart) seems more powerful, usually.
EB : Eyebrow at bridge of nose
SE : Side of eyes at base of temple
UE : Under eyes on orbital bone
UN : Under nose
CH : Chin indentation
CB : Under collarbone just outside sternum
UA : Under arm (about 4 – 6 inches or at bra strap for women)
RB : Rib (between bottom and second ribs in line with nipples)
TH : Thumb (corner of base of nail on medial side)
IF : Index finger (same location)
MF : Middle finger
BF : Baby finger
KC : Karate chop spot on side of hands
CR : Crown of head (on top towards the back)
The following, which I refer to as T-EM, is a combination of tapping and EMDR:
1. Place index and middle finger of either hand on the eyebrow points. Press the left eyebrow point and look left (with eyes open or closed) and the press the right eyebrow point and look right. Repeat this alternating pattern for a minute or so, or until you feel relief (either a yawn, a sigh, or a more positive thought or image).
2. Check in with yourself; what comes up for you now? Continue T-EM with whatever upsetting material is still present.
Ideally, you should continue this process until you feel no more disturbance about the issue, but instead feel strong, clear and hopeful about your ability to deal in a more empowered and centered way now and in the future. Once an issue is completely and truly cleared to a zero, it will not resurface and you will be free of it!
